If you can afford it, get financial help

If you can afford it, get financial help. Many lawyers do not have such background. There may also be some groups in your community which offer financial planning help. Take advantage of those. Or find help in financial forums -- all you have to spend for this will be your internet connection.

9. Get insured

Immediately get medical health insurance and life and disability insurance now that you are alone and do not have a second income to fall back on. This will be very beneficial for you and your children in the future.

10. Know your state's child support policy

Getting divorce means getting rid of your spouse - your children are still yours and your spouse's responsibilities. Know how much your children should get from your ex-spouse and insist that you get it. Do not be a martyr and carry the load all on your own.

Breaking up is hard enough as it is, try not to add financial crisis to the package. Protect your finances in the same way that you are protecting yourself and your children. A broken home should not mean broken pockets as well.
