Automatic debiting of your account can be a legal way to pay but the method has many fake telemarketers. Therefore you should follow careful ways to protect your accounts from scams. Here are ways on how to detect signs of trouble.
1. You may receive a mail or phone call from a company that offers a credit card with free prizes regardless of your low credit reports. When you say ‘yes’ to the offer, they then respond, requesting your checking account details.
2. Fraud telemarketers will not answer questions or don’t further explain your concerns. Credible ones will explain the information you need in detail. If in doubt at all, ask them to put the offer in the mail so that you can study it closer. If they refuse to do so, something's wrong.
3. Once they’ve got your checking account, they send this with your particulars in a demand draft. It doesn’t require your signature but the bank receives it and takes the amount of the draft from your checking account without you knowing it until the bill comes.
4. If they are taping your conversation, ask why. It could be evidence against you in the end.
5. They ask for your bank account. Credible companies don’t ask it unless you volunteer to give it to them.
6. The person should honestly tell you that the demand draft will be charged on you.
7. Everything they do must be done with your consent including obtaining your verifiable authorization and recording of conversation either verbally or in writing.
8. Telemarketers can be very convincing although they’re very deceitful. Stay vigilant and make sure you understand everything they tell you, ask the person to repeat it if necessary.
9. Telemarketers are very persuasive. They could offer you overwhelming rewards when they ask for your approval. If it sounds too good to pass up, it probably is a sign of future trouble.
10. The company they are working for isn’t familiar to you. Even though there are new companies always in search for clients, it is also advisable for you to consider its background and status.
Remember that you can be fooled by some convincing telemarketers. Make sure to familiarize yourself with their particulars, never give your account information even though you’re confident. Be open minded but don’t be afraid to trust your instincts for they can keep you from believing tempting but phony offers.
